Communicate with people the way you write prompts

When we tune AI, we write prompts with great care: what the background is, what role the model should play, what constraints exist. We worry the AI might not understand. But then we turn around and assign work to a teammate with: “Hey, go build this feature.” If you give no concrete context, no vision, and only a cold instruction, how is that different from feeding AI a bad prompt? Of course the output will be poor.

The VCE framework mentioned in the interview is basically high-quality prompt engineering. First give the Vision: tell people why this matters and how it relates to the company’s future. Then discuss Commitment: what support I will give you and what result I need from you. Only after that comes Execution. If any link is missing, execution will suffer. This is especially true for highly intelligent technical people. They do not need you to teach them how to work; they need to know why they are fighting.

Many times we think the team’s execution is weak, when in fact we have not provided enough “context window.” Instead of complaining that subordinates are not capable, we should reflect on whether our instructions are too vague. Treat communication as programming: every instruction should be clear and precise, with fault tolerance built in. Only then can the team run like a precise machine.
