The AI giants’ double standard: they claim to respect creators while freeloading on your name and value
The CEO of Superhuman, Grammarly’s parent company, recently gave an interview that looked like a public crash.
One moment he was saying at SXSW that “in the AI era, human taste and judgment are more valuable.” The next, people discovered that his own product had put countless creators’ names and work into an AI feature without authorization.
Under repeated questions from the host, his apology was perfunctory and his defense was full of holes.
At the center of the controversy is Grammarly’s “expert review” feature.
Under the banner of “well-known experts giving you writing advice,” it used the names of many creators, including The Verge’s editor-in-chief, to generate statements that did not belong to them at all, even labeling them with marks that looked like official verification.
No permission, no prior communication, and even the after-the-fact remedy was only a perfunctory “email us to opt out.”
The most absurd part was the CEO’s logic.
When repeatedly asked “how much should you pay me for using my name,” he kept dodging the question and only repeated “we provided attribution” and “how is this different from a user asking ChatGPT?”
But everyone can see the truth clearly. So-called “attribution” is just a fig leaf over infringement.
Turning “I stole your work and put your name on it” into “I am driving traffic to you” is the word game the AI industry is best at.
This has never been just one company’s problem. It is a collective disease across the AI industry.
An NBC poll shows that the American public’s favorability toward AI has fallen below that of ICE, with negative sentiment 20 points higher.
Big companies always explain public resistance as “people are afraid AI will take their jobs,” but they never admit the real issue: people are not rejecting the technology itself. They are rejecting a technological carnival where ordinary people are only exploited and never allowed to share the gains.
We have heard too many excuses about “technological progress inevitably causing growing pains.”
But the legal bottom line should never be the moral ceiling of technology companies.
AI can copy your words, imitate your tone, and stitch together your views, but it can never take away the living creativity that belongs only to you.
And that creativity should be something technology protects, not material it plunders.
Stop using “a promising future” to draw empty promises for creators.
If AI wants to truly win people’s trust, it should start by learning to ask: “May I use your work?”
