Behind OpenAI’s retreat: is it finally time for the AI industry to settle the bill?
The AI industry has been telling stories for three years, and it has finally reached the moment when the bill must be paid.
OpenAI, which once crossed into a new hundred-billion-dollar market almost every week, suddenly announced at an all-hands meeting that it would cut all “side quests” and focus fully on the enterprise market.
Everyone is praising it for finally understanding strategic focus. I only see the panic it can no longer hide.
This contraction was never a voluntary choice. It is a defensive move after being forced into a corner by competitors. Axios data punctured all the dignity: just 10 weeks ago, OpenAI and Anthropic were roughly even in enterprise spending share. Now Anthropic has taken 73% of the market.
OpenAI once became a legend overnight through consumer users, but now it says consumer AI has “no future” and turns around to grab the enterprise market where its rivals are already firmly established.
That is not focus. That is losing its own home turf.
The split in the AI industry has never been as glaring as it is today.
Jensen Huang captured the essence in one sentence: companies with imagination use AI to create more possibilities; companies without imagination only use AI to cut jobs and costs.
Some use AI to open new growth frontiers. Others treat it as a fig leaf for management failure. The industry’s ceiling and floor are being stretched at the same time.
Even more ironic is that the metaverse, once hyped to the sky, is now mostly wreckage.
Meta’s Horizon Worlds closes and reopens like a joke no one cares about. Metaverse land that once sold for hundreds of thousands per square meter now cannot even attract a visitor.
Every concept without real user demand and matured only by capital will eventually burst, from the metaverse to the many consumer-AI gimmicks.
In 2025, the AI industry has fully moved from “who can tell the sexier story” into a survival knockout round of “who can actually make money.”
The tech industry will never lack romantic imagination, but the ones that survive are always the people with their feet on the ground.
