The problem big-model companies cannot fix: who really holds AI risk?

AI risk can be split into two buckets.

The first bucket is foundation-model risk. For example, whether the model itself is toxic or biased. The problems in this bucket are what the companies building large models, the big names we all know, should worry about. They have teams of brilliant people working on them.

The second bucket is application-layer risk. Put plainly, this is developers setting traps for themselves. For example, you build a RAG app, but configure permissions poorly, and the AI leaks internal company documents it should never have seen. Or you give an AI agent a tool that can delete the database without adding any guardrails.

Some companies are targeting exactly this second bucket. They do not care much about the model itself. They care about what can go wrong at the interface between your application and the model.
