Why AI is rewriting the foundational rules of human science

Over the past 30 years, every technological revolution in the internet and social media has been nothing more than a trivial backend IT upgrade compared with biomedicine.

At most, they optimized information transmission. They never touched the deepest underlying logic of biological science: experimentation.

Today, AI is finally about to tear down and rebuild the artificial scientific research building that has stood for a century.

Many people think AI’s impact on biology is AlphaFold predicting protein structures, or large models designing DNA.

But one sentence from Ginkgo Bioworks founder Jason Kelly punctures the truth: the core bottleneck of biological research has never been an inability to design code. It is the inability to run enough experiments.

For a top biology PhD, the core work of five years of doctoral study is holding a pipette in a lab, manually transferring liquid and repeating boring experimental loops.

They ran a disruptive experiment with OpenAI: using a reasoning large model plus an autonomous laboratory to optimize a cell-free protein synthesis system.

The AI autonomously completed the full loop of “design experiment, run test, analyze data, iterate optimization.” In only four rounds it surpassed the Stanford lab’s industry benchmark, and by six rounds it exceeded the baseline by 40%.

It did not win by being fundamentally smarter than humans. It won because it could run research cycles 24 hours a day without stopping, completing in days what humans need months to finish.

The inefficiency of the existing research system is already deeply diseased.

Top labs around the world work in isolation, exchanging purified conclusions in papers only once a year, while large numbers of failed experimental results sink forever without a trace.

AI can let hundreds of models share full experimental data in real time, and even failed results can become core nutrients for other models.

Even more fatal is the cost advantage. Today, 95% of biological research funding goes to labor, lab space, and idle equipment, while actual reagent costs are less than 5%.

Autonomous laboratories can raise equipment utilization from under 20% to 70%, ensuring that 90% of funding goes to the science itself and directly delivering a 10x efficiency jump.

The tech world has long approached biology with a kind of ignorant arrogance.

It assumes that installing a lab management system or setting up online collaboration counts as digital transformation.

But that is like putting headlights on a horse carriage. It will never reach the speed of a car. Only AI plus autonomous laboratories can truly move biological research from the manual era into the automation era.

In 1960, when IBM mainframes ruled the world, no one believed every child would be able to program in the future.

Today, when research is locked inside the laboratories of top universities, no one believes everyone will be able to do scientific experiments in the future.

AI is turning that wild idea into reality. This is not future science fiction. It is a revolution already happening.
