The truly scary part of AI is that you do not know how to use it to expand capacity
Lately everyone keeps talking about whether AI will take people’s jobs. To be honest, that anxiety is real. But if business leaders, the people who actually control resources and direction, are still stuck at the level of “use AI to save a few headcount costs,” that is the truly dangerous part.
I recently heard an executive in charge of a large software product share a very interesting number. He said they have roughly thirty to forty thousand developers under them, and the current goal is not to cut that group in half. The goal is to find ways for those thirty to forty thousand people to do the work of two hundred thousand.
Do you see the shift? The logic has completely changed.
Whether you work in software development, supply chains, or finance, any company doing business has a pile of backlogged needs. They are the projects people keep saying they would have done long ago if they had the resources. The reality now is that the outside environment is changing too quickly, customer demand is enormous, and simply adding people cannot keep up. If AI can improve efficiency by five or ten times, what we should do is not send everyone home, but bring all those innovation ideas that have been sitting on the to-do list for years into reality.
That leads to a more practical question: if we are not laying people off, what will everyone do in the future?
Roles will definitely change, and the change will be major. In the past, product managers might mainly write documents, draw diagrams, and throw requirements over to engineering. Now it is different. With AI, product managers themselves can be builders. You can use AI to generate a working prototype and even finish seventy or eighty percent of the code, then bring in engineers for the final optimization.
For engineers, the future may feel more like being a contractor. You are no longer laying every brick yourself. Instead, you have a group of AI agents working under you. You need to learn how to direct seven or eight agents working in parallel and check their output. This human-AI collaboration model can let a small team move with the force of a large company. What one person could not handle before can now be done by one person commanding a group of AI agents.
