Experience may be a trap. Find some high-slope young people

When traditional companies hire executives or core technical staff, what do they value most? Experience. Has this person worked at some big company for ten years? Have they led a team of hundreds? But in some startups, people prefer a different kind of person: someone who may not have a shiny résumé, but whose learning curve is extremely steep.

They call this “high-slope” talent. Why choose these people? Because so much in AI is brand new, and old experience can actually become a burden. Someone who spent 20 years in traditional software may be trapped by their own habits and fail to understand today’s generative AI workflows. Meanwhile, a recent graduate who wants to prove themselves may be able to absorb the latest model in just two weekends.

Of course, that does not mean experience is useless. For legal, finance, or managing large sales teams, experience still rules. But in core product and technology innovation, hunger and learning speed matter far more than a thick résumé. The people who are not yet softened by big-company “retirement culture” and are willing to stay up all night digging into a technical breakthrough are the scarcest resource right now.
