The logic of technical centralization inside huge organizations

How do multinational giants manage technology? A lot of managers would probably smile knowingly after hearing this. Multinational companies often run into a dead end: each regional branch builds things its own way, and in the end everyone is reinventing the same wheels.

Alex Lindner, the technology leader at Experian, one of the world’s three major credit-rating agencies, manages and influences more than ten thousand people. His approach is extremely hard-line. Internally, everything related to underlying technology and security must be highly centralized. No matter which country or business line you belong to, the underlying architecture has to look the same.

Why insist on doing it this way? Because only then can security and privacy standards be locked down firmly. Local consumer-facing products can still be delegated to business teams. But if someone insists on using a favorite tool that breaks the standard, leadership will force the migration no matter how painful it is. Many digital transformation efforts fail exactly because standards are not unified, leaving behind a pile of information silos that are almost impossible to remove.
