The quiet-money quant world and the internet are practically two universes

When people talk about quantitative trading, the first thing most of us imagine is grinding through endless late nights. But Nimit Sohani, a former Citadel quant researcher and Stanford PhD, shared something counterintuitive: while the AI world has become brutally competitive and exhausting, the quant trading world may now have a better work-life balance. Traders basically follow market hours, and once work is over, nobody brings the job home. Because the tech sector is so crowded, today’s companies can only fight for advantage by throwing more human effort at the problem.

What is even more interesting is the cultural gap between the two circles. Tech people want to open source things, write online, and make sure everyone knows how strong they are. Quant people often do not even know what the colleague at the next desk is working on. The level of defensiveness is extreme: even a tiny strategy is treated as an absolute secret, and job changes often come with six to twelve months of paid non-compete time spent at home doing nothing.

That extreme culture of secrecy has something to teach us too. When a technology truly touches the core profit engine, open source and public sharing are no longer the default choice. If we want to build core competitiveness inside a company, perhaps we should also learn from this habit of locking down core assets tightly.
