Block’s Wild Experiment: Using AI to Kill Corporate Hierarchy

Jack Dorsey did something every CEO thinks about but would never dare to do.

The legendary figure who is the only person to have founded two S&P 500 companies cut 40% of Block’s employees in one move at the end of 2025.

Not because performance was bad. Not to satisfy Wall Street.

He said: “If you rebuilt a company with AI today, it would never look like this, and it would never need this many people.”

This is not another cliche about “AI improving productivity.” It is a full declaration of war on the modern corporate system.

For the past 2,000 years, all of our organizational forms have been built on the same foundation: hierarchy.

From Roman legions to modern companies, there is only one reason the pyramid structure has ruled the world: information could only be transmitted through people.

The entire purpose of managers was to break down instructions from above and summarize information from below.

But this system is naturally lossy. Every layer distorts information once. Every bit of concentrated power kills a bit of creativity.

The arrival of AI has invalidated this premise for the first time.

At Block, all work leaves a digital trace: code, documents, meeting recordings, Slack messages. Dorsey fed all of it into a company-level large model.

Now any employee can ask the AI: what problems have we encountered in payment security over the past three months?

Any board member can ask the AI: why did user retention decline in the European market?

No layered reporting. No PPT. No one screening and filtering information.

The whole company has become a conversational agent.

Dorsey is compressing Block’s management hierarchy from five layers to two or three. His ultimate goal: 6,000 people in the company, all reporting directly to him.

In the past this would have been fantasy. In the AI age, it is becoming real.

The future company will have only three kinds of people left: - Builders: engineers, designers, and salespeople who use AI tools to create value - Result owners: people who define goals and are responsible for the final customer experience - Coaches: people who help others improve skills rather than manage their work

The middle managers who were once so valued, people who do no concrete work and only pass information around, hold meetings, and make PPTs, are being systematically eliminated.

Even more disruptive is that AI is redefining the CEO’s job.

In the past, the CEO was the decision maker, the strategist, the brain of the company.

But Dorsey says the future CEO is an aligner.

Your job is no longer to make every decision, but to ensure that this company-level agent always moves in the right direction. Always aligned with customer needs. Always aligned with company values.

The brain of the company is no longer one person. It is the entire system itself.

That is why Dorsey’s transformation matters so much.

Most companies still treat AI as a plugin, a tool that helps employees do more work. They say: we will use AI to make everyone 10 times more efficient.

But this is the most dangerous misunderstanding.

AI is not an engine attached to a carriage. AI is the car itself.

You cannot graft AI onto a pyramid structure. You must tear down the entire pyramid and rebuild everything around AI.

This is not a productivity problem. It is a survival problem.

Over the next five years, every company that does not do this will be crushed by companies that do.

Because when your competitor can do with 100 people what takes you 1,000, when their decision speed is 10 times faster than yours, when they can hear every customer’s voice while you only hear filtered reports passing through layers, you have no chance of winning.

Hierarchy has ruled humanity for 2,000 years.

And now its end has finally arrived.
